So why then do campaigners and change makers often feel that the responsibility for changing the world sits with them – and them alone?
When I’ve led campaigns I’ve known that I’ve had support around me from colleagues and friends. And yet, I often felt that all the responsibility for creating this positive change in the world rested on my shoulders. This responsibility felt like pressure which then made me doubt my abilities and wonder if I was the best person to do this and whether I could achieve real change.
Recently I shared my experience with other activists and change makers. What surprised me was that most of them had experienced similar feelings. They have also wondered if what they are doing will be enough to tackle the injustices in the world. They shared that they felt if the campaign wasn’t successful, they would be failing and letting people and our planet down. They also considered if there was someone else out there who could do a better job of it.
We compared examples of feeling; stressed, responsible and a nagging sense of self doubt. We noticed how it took a toll on us personally – often through feeling nervous and worried or working harder. We shared there were times we would retreat into our shell and not take part in the usual activities or events that would bring us enjoyment and relaxation.
We realised that very often, as campaigners and change makers, there is no space to talk about how we are feeling and the thoughts in our head around ‘but what if we aren’t successful – what then?’ . We don’t have to continue this way, there is another option. We can come together and share what’s going on for us, so that we can release that pressure of responsibility while remaining focused on creating that change which will make our world better, more just and more beautiful.
